Reflections from Northern Nicaragua: Carmela

a woman in her corn field

Carmela says she is very happy because Self-Help International has helped her grow in wisdom, skills, and financially. Wisdom because she now knows all the high-quality varieties promoted by the program, which are nutritious and beneficial to health; skills because she has learned techniques that improve the yield of the varieties she has been planting; and financially because the loans granted by SHI allow her to take good care of her crops and then, with the sales, be able to pay off her loans and invest the surplus. She has started a business making corn products such as nacatamales, enchiladas, and rosquillas. She, along with her husband and children, sell them and generate a profit. If she has corn left over at the end of the year, she uses it to feed her animals. They sell the meat in the community for extra money. She also helps other people like her by giving them seed of the varieties she has grown.
