Unsafe drinking water is the leading cause of malnutrition in children under five.

It’s the second leading cause of death. Not only does clean water significantly reduce waterborne diseases and their life threatening effects, it also leads to better daily school and work attendance. This enables families to lead healthier, more productive lives.

300 Children

Each year, up to 300 Nicaraguan children die from completely preventable water borne diseases.

75,000+ people

More than 75,000 people in Nicaragua are drinking safe drinking water today because of your support.

An Effective Water Chlorinator System

Electric chlorinators are expensive, and often technically challenging for the areas we serve. Instead, our local, trained technician installs a simple, affordable, and effective, water chlorinator system made of PVC pipe. This system is durable enough to last a minimum of five years, and any damaged parts can be easily replaced.

This system was developed by our partners at Bountifield International (previously Compatible Technology International). Click here to learn more about the chlorination system.

Promoting Community Education and Ownership

The community contributes a nominal fee towards the parts required for the chlorination system and covers all ongoing costs (typically $6/month for a community of 500 – 1,000 residents) to ensure community ownership and sustainability.

We offer free training on basic sanitation and hygiene education to each community to ensure they reap the full benefits of access to clean water. We train local leaders to maintain the water systems within their community – creating jobs, leadership, community engagement, and sustainability for years to come.
