Farmer’s Day Celebration: A Proud Moment for Self-Help International

On a bright Friday morning in Nkorang, Nkawie, Ghana, excitement filled the air as the community gathered to celebrate the 40th annual Farmer’s Day. This year’s celebration was particularly meaningful for Self-Help International and its Agricultural and Entrepreneurship Development (AED) program.
A standout moment was St. Justin’s School, a member of Self-Help’s Agric Club, being named Best Agricultural School. This recognition reflects the success of teaching young students modern agronomic practices to enhance traditional farming methods.
The event, attended by dignitaries such as the Paramount Chief of Toase, the parliamentary candidate, and the local police commander, began with an educational session from the National Fire Service on preventing harmattan fire outbreaks. Though Farmer’s Day is typically observed on the first Friday of December,
this year’s event was held early, on November 8th, due to Ghana’s
upcoming general elections.

At 11 a.m., the Municipal Director of Agriculture delivered an inspiring speech, applauding farmers for their resilience and vital contributions. The highlight of the day came during the awards ceremony, where St. Justin’s School received a standing ovation for its accomplishment.
Self-Help International’s microcredit clients also shone brightly. Theresa, who won 1st runner-up, shared, “I never imagined I would receive an award like this. With the support from Self-Help International, I’ve been able to improve my farming practices and provide better for my family.” Similarly, 2nd runner-up Felicia expressed, “This recognition encourages me to work even harder. Self-Help has truly transformed my life by providing the tools and knowledge I needed to succeed.” Vivian, who was recognized in another district the same day , added, “I’m grateful to Self-Help for helping me build confidence in my farming skills. This award is proof that hard work pays off.”
In the Upper West Region, clients Cynthia, Justine, and Elizabeth achieved outstanding honors as Best Peanut Farmer, Best Maize Farmer, and Best Disseminator of Technologies, respectively. Cynthia said, “I couldn’t believe I harvested 17 bags of peanuts from just one acre. Self-Help’s guidance has been life-

changing.”Justine remarked, “Keeping my farm clean and planting in double rows have made all the difference. This award motivates me to keep learning and improving.” Elizabeth added, “Teaching other women the techniques I’ve learned from Self-Help is my way of giving back. Together, we’re growing stronger.”
The day concluded with a speech from the Paramount Chief of Toase, who presented the Best Farmer award to a deserving female farmer, underscoring the growing role of women in agriculture.
