Nurturing Fields, Feeding Futures: Agya Kusi’s Dedication to Sustainable Farming and School Feeding

Mr. Atta Kusi, known affectionately as “Agya Atta,” is a 54-year-old farmer who lives in the small village of Agya Mensah in Timeabu, Ghana. For the past 30 years, farming has been the heartbeat of his life. When he first arrived in the village in 1994, he began cultivating maize, cocoa, and vegetables on a small plot of land, growing just enough to feed his family. Married with 11 children, Agya Atta worked tirelessly, facing numerous challenges over the years: unpredictable weather, pests, and a lack of resources for good seeds and fertilizers.

Yet, his passion for farming and determination to support his family never wavered. Slowly, through perseverance and hard work, he was able to expand his land. Today, he cultivates on a five-acre plot, where farming remains his primary source of income. The maize and cocoa he grows help sustain his large family, while the vegetables provide much-needed nutrition.

But farming for Agya Atta is more than just a means of survival. He has a deep passion for agriculture and a strong desire to uplift his community. In recent years, this dedication led him to volunteer as part of Self-Help International’s School Feeding Program. As a volunteer, Agya Atta has taken on the responsibility of growing maize specifically for the program, ensuring that children in the community have nutritious meals at school.

With the support of Self-Help International, Agya Atta is using improved farming techniques and quality seeds to grow maize that contributes to the food security of his village. His contribution doesn’t just benefit his own household but also the future of his community’s children, who are nourished by the food his fields produce. After harvest, he donates the yields to the community school to help in preparation of porridge for the school children.
