Reflections from Northern Nicaragua: José

a farmer in his corn field

José doesn’t own land, but his father owns 24 acres. They work together to grow corn and beans. He joined the Self-Help International agriculture program in 2022 and has done well every harvest season with the varieties of corn, wheat, and beans that were provided. For example, he sold 3,000 pounds of corn from which he was able to buy a power sprayer, pay back his loan to SHI, and have money left over for some other household needs. His wife likes the INTA-Nutrader corn because she knows it contains good nutrition and tastes good when she makes tortillas or cornbread. Jose has given seed to neighboring farmers so they can have the same success that he has had. Now he says he no longer needs to work in Costa Rica to earn extra money. In previous years he did the initial planting and then let his wife, two children and a nephew care for and harvest the crops. Now he plans to stay home and take better care of his crops himself.
